OpenStreetMap (OSM) is a free and open-source mapping project that creates and maintains a detailed, editable map of the world. Founded in 2004 by Steve Coast, OSM relies on a global community of volunteers who collect, verify, and update geographic information such as roads, buildings, parks, waterways, public transport routes, and points of interest. Contributors add data using GPS devices, aerial imagery, local knowledge, and field surveys. The map data is released under the Open Database License (ODbL), allowing individuals, businesses, researchers, and governments to use, modify, and share the data while crediting OpenStreetMap and keeping derived databases open under the same terms. OpenStreetMap powers a wide range of applications, including navigation systems, logistics platforms, humanitarian mapping projects, urban planning tools, environmental research, and location-based services. Many organizations use OSM data as an alternative or complement to commercial mapping services because of its openness, flexibility, and community-driven updates. Often called the “Wikipedia of maps,” OpenStreetMap provides freely accessible geographic data that anyone can improve, making it one of the most comprehensive and widely used open mapping resources in the world.
