Smedley Butler was one of the most decorated Major Generals in the U.S. history. He was much influenced by his father’s political career and displayed a burning desire to join the army since his childhood. He quit school before the completion of the course and lied about his age to get the commission of Second Lieutenant. Thus started an illustrious career during the course of which he fought one battle after another, displaying his courage and leadership skills numerous times.

His acts of valour, especially in the battles of China, Mexico and Haiti were recognized and lauded. In between all the wars, he also found time to root out the corruption in Philadelphia in his capacity as Director of Public Safety. His work, post his retirement is equally significant as he fearlessly voiced his concerns on business interests from warfare, also condemning the twisted motives of US government in the wars. He made a series of speeches on these issues throughout the country, which were extremely well-received.

He further showed his boldness as he revealed the Business Plot, a conspiracy to overthrow the president and impose dictatorship over America. Due to these efforts, he is revered and remembered till today for not only his achievements on the battlefield but those off it as well.
