Gideon Welles was the U.S. Secretary of the Navy first under the administration of President Abraham Lincoln and later under the presidency of Andrew Johnson. Besides being a renowned politician, he was a prominent journalist and the founder of Hartford Times. As an editor of this paper, his editorials used to express his political views. As a member of the Connecticut General Assembly, his reformative measurements of Calvinist doctrines regarding necessary qualifications of becoming witness in court created much uproar. For several years, he acted as the postmaster of Hartford. After leaving Democratic Party due to a conflict over slavery issue, he played a crucial role in the formation of Republican Party. At that time, Hartford Evening Press used to publish his valuable articles on politics. As the Secretary of the Navy under the administration of Abraham Lincoln, he skilfully handled the Navy department to make it free from corruption and political favouritism. He took remarkable measurement to expand the U.S. Navy. During this time, his commendable contribution towards Navy includes providing protection and employment opportunity to African-American naval officers who escaped to avoid slavery.
