Personal Fact of Garrison Keillor

George A. Smith was born into a family of Church Presidents and was the nephew of Joseph Smith, Sr, founder of the Latter Day Saint movement and one of the Eight Witnesses of the ‘Book of Mormon’. He was the cousin of Joseph Smith, Jr., who published the ‘Book of Mormon’. From an early age, he was involved in several church activities. At sixteen, Smith went on a 2000-mile march along with members of ‘Latter Day Saints’, a church group.

He was ordained as a priest and at the age of 21, obtained ordainment as an Apostle, which is a priesthood position of high authority in the Latter Day Saint movement. He was also a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles and was later appointed as the First Counselor in the First Presidency of the Church.

He represented the Mormon Church during the Utah War, giving speeches and counselling Mormons. His personal life, unlike his priesthood, was controversial as he married a number of times and had many wives who bore him twenty children.
