Personal Fact of Garret Hobart

Garret Hobart served as the 24th Vice President of the United States, under President William McKinley. Born in a family of clergymen, Hobart started off as a corporate lawyer. Briefly, he served in the local government positions before serving as a Republican candidate for the New Jersey General Assembly and New Jersey Senate.

The high point in his career came when he was selected as the Republican candidate for the Vice President post. Unlike his predecessors, Hobart expanded the powers of the vice presidency significantly. He became a presidential adviser and took a leadership role as president of the Senate. Furthermore, Hobart shared a close friendship with McKinley who in turn relied on the former completely.

With time, he became a close confidante and associate of McKinley so much so that he was referred to as Assistant President and his home became known as the Little Cream White House. One of the foremost reasons for Hobart’s success was his amicable nature and personality. He possessed a sense of humour, charm and tact – qualities that helped him attain success both in public and private life. It was for his ability to work with others that made him an outstanding state legislator of his time
