Personal Fact of Frederick Buechner

Frederick Buechner aspired to be a writer after completing a stint in the army and graduating from Princeton. His first novel, A Long Day’s Dying, received critical acclaim. But soon, his writing career got stuck and he began to feel the need to deal with his spiritual emptiness.

He began attending the Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church, and inspired by the preaching of the pastor George Buttrick, studied theology at Union Theological Seminary in New York. He was instrumental in developing the Department of Religion at Phillips Exeter Academy. Apart from A Long Day’s Dying he also penned several other novels such as The Return of Ansel Gibbs, The Season’s Difference, and The Final Beast. His most famous works are the four novels of the Bebb series and Godric.

His theological works, The Magnificent Defeat and The Hungering Dark, are compilations of his sermons. He penned four volumes of his memoirs’The Sacred Journey’, Now and Then, Telling Secrets, and The Eyes of the Heart. The success of this theologian lies in that he could make faith and spirituality, matters of interest in contemporary fiction, without being too preachy. Most of his books deal with challenges that come our way. He assures us that God will always support and protect us.
