Eric Leroy Adams born September 1, 1960 is an American politician and former police officer currently serving as the 110th mayor of New York City since 2022. A moderate member of the Democratic Party, Adams had a 20-year career in law enforcement, starting with the New York City Transit Police and later with the New York City Police Department (NYPD), where he retired as a captain. From 2006 to 2013, he represented the 20th Senate district in Brooklyn as a state senator. In November 2013, he was elected Brooklyn Borough President, becoming the first African American to hold that position, and was reelected in November 2017.
