By sending sketches to newspapers as early as six, she had all the qualities deemed fit to be a writer. Due to a financial crisis, Anita took to theatre in her teens. But she aspired to do much more with her life and decided to write one act screenplays. The Biograph Company selected her third screenplay for production, and thus started her writing career.

After churning out a number of successful screenplays by drawing inspiration from her daily life experiences, she wanted to try her hand at acting too. Going against her mother’s wishes, she married the son of a band conductor in a bid to gain a breakthrough in Hollywood. However, as fate would have, her husband turned out to be penniless. She abandoned him and returned to her mother’s place and began working as a staff writer in a production company.

As more and more of her works started getting produced, her reputation as a script writer surged, and she shifted base to New York. In the city, she made acquaintances with the likes of John Emerson, Douglas Fairbanks and Joseph Schenck. At the peak of her playwright career, she also penned the comic satire, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes: The Intimate Diary of A Professional Lady.
