Personal Fact of Maurice Greene

Maurice Greene is a renowned American former track and field sprinter. He is an Olympic gold medallist distinguished for his 100m and 200m races. He remained in the peak of his athletics career from 1997 to 2004 and in 1999 he made the 100m world record with 9.79 seconds, which was later surpassed. He achieved great heights over the years bagging four Olympic medals including two gold medals, one silver and one bronze medal.

He remained World Champion five times, which included three 100m (1997, 1999, 2001), one 200m (1999) and one 4×100 m relay (1999). Thus he earned three gold medals during the 1999 World Championships in Athletics, an accomplishment earlier achieved by only two athletes – Michael Johnson and Carl Lewis, later equalled by three other sprinters.

He also remained an Indoor World Champion (1999) and set the indoor 60-meter dash record twice. Presently his 60m indoor record stands at 6.39s. He remains the only athlete to hold the world records in 100m and 60m at the same time. He also won two gold medals (one 100m and one 4100 m relay) in the Goodwill Games, held in 1998 at New York City. Following his injuries that gradually started affecting his career, he finally took official retirement in 2008.

Post retirement Greene became an IAAF ambassador. He also commenced a career in TV appearing in several shows like Dancing with the Stars, Blind Date and Identity. The 2012-2013 season at the University of California at Los Angeles(UCLA) saw him volunteering as a track coach.
