Franklin James Schaffner was an American film director who is best remembered for his Academy Award winning film Patton. Winner of four Emmys and one Academy Award, Schaffner’s tryst into the world of showbiz started following the World War II days. After having been relieved from his duties in World War II where he served as a lieutenant, Schaffner found work as an assistant director. He soon made his way into CBS television network, significantly contributing to what is now known as the golden age of TV. He made his debut with the 1949 television show Wesley. Following this, he went on to wear his directorial cap for more than 150 live dramas and 100 shows. During the mid-1950s, he came up with spectacular work in the form of Twelve Angry Men, The Caine Mutiny Court Martial and The Defenders, each of which won him an Emmy award. His venture into films came in 1963 with the movie The Strippers. In 1968, Schaffner hit gold with sci-fi movie Planet of the Apes. The film was widely appreciated. He followed its success with the Academy Award winning film, Patton. Schaffner’s brilliance was his creativity. His films were visually spectacular and compelling. He dealt with the subject very keenly and brought forth on screen a power-packed film that was high on imagination and extremely inspirational. |
