Personal Fact of Bessie Love | |
Bessie Love was one of the most influential American actors of the late silent films and early talkies. Supremely talented, Bessie’s tryst with acting started early in her life. Her acting career began upon the suggestion of Tom Mix who advised her mother to make Bessie take up acting professionally. Her mother sent her to Biograph Studios where she met her mentor D.W. Griffith. It was Griffith that gave Bessie Love her screen name from her original name, Juanita Horton. Following her small role in Intolerance, Love gained her first prominent role in The Flying Torpedo in 1916. Thereafter, she starred in a number of silent films. In 1929, when sound made its way to films, Love was one of the few actors who found the transition from silent films to early talkies smooth. She won an Academy Award nomination for her stellar performance in The Broadway Melody. She moved to Britain in 1935 where she resumed her acting career. For the next five decades, she starred in several films. Year 1983 marked the end of her acting career. |
